Known for resembling small spider webs or tree branches, “spider veins“, also referred to as “telangiectasias” or “angioectasias, are a common condition that mostly affect the legs, hands, nose, cheeks and chin and appear as thin red or blue lines on the surface of the skin.
Although they generally aren’t harmful, spider veins can sometimes cause swelling, throbbing, rashes and even restless legs. As the appearance of these veins can take a toll on your confidence, it’s good to know there are things you can do to prevent and reduce them.
What causes spider veins?
These veins develop from venous deficiency, when blood flows backwards into the vein and causes pressure on the vein walls. This causes the veins to enlarge or inflate, becoming more prominent in appearance.
While spider veins can be genetic, they can also be caused by a variety of factors, including; poor blood circulation or blood clots, constipation, UV exposure and prolonged sitting or standing.
Facial spider veins can also be caused by abrasive scrubbing (ie excessive or harsh exfoliation), as well as wind damage and temperature extremes.
In addition, certain lifestyle choices can increase your risk for developing these veins, like smoking, drinking alcohol and obesity. Some birth control pills have also been linked to the condition.
Regular exercise and massages can relieve the pressure in the veins and improve blood circulation to the area, helping prevent more spider veins from forming.
How do you get rid of such veins?
While there is no “cure” for spider veins, elos Plus technology has been proven a safe and effective treatment for dramatically reducing the appearance of spider veins.
Elos Plus technology combines intense pulsed light (IPL) and radio frequency energies to precisely target and heat the vein without disturbing the surrounding skin. It then generates the production of collagen and elastin to remove these veins, revealing firmer, more radiant skin.
As elos can be used to treat large skin areas, it’s ideal for improving leg veins and vascular lesions. To ensure you are comfortable during the procedure, it features an advanced comfort system that monitors your skin temperature.
Whilst elos is a great non-invasive treatment option for anyone with unwanted spider veins or vascular lesions, it’s important to remember that it doesn’t prevent the development of new veins.
Depending on the severity of the vein you wish to treat, you may require between 1-4 treatments, each lasting between 20-45 minutes.
